L-Theanine is the amino acid that takes the edge off caffeine in green tea. It also takes the edge off stress, anxiety, and insomnia. Theanine readily crosses the blood brain-barrier where it increases alpha-waves and GABA, a brain chemical known for its calming effect. Unlike tranquilizing drugs, Theanine does not induce stupor, rather it soothes the mind into a relaxing state without affecting the ability to concentrate and remember. Theanine also increases levels of dopamine in the brain and thereby has mood-enhancing effects. Theanine may also lower blood pressure and decrease the symptoms of PMS.

We all face stress each day. Some of us are able to deal with it better than others. Wouldn’t it be nice to tip the scales in our favor? Tyrosine may do just that. Tyrosine is an important amino acid that is a precursor to a number of neurotransmitters related to our feeling of well-being. A deficiency of these neurotransmitters will result in depression and a reduced ability to cope with stress. Studies have indicated a marked increase in ability to deal with stress, as well as improved endurance to anxiety and stress under fatigue when supplementing with tyrosine. Studies have also shown that tyrosine supplementation results in increased performance while under stressful conditions.
